Abstract
The aim of this research was to compare the published results of the Korean Burden of Disease study and the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study. We reviewed the literature published in The Lancet and conducted a GBD website search. In addition, we reviewed the results of the Korean Burden of Disease study, which was recently published as a supplement to the Journal of Korean Medical Science. The ranking from the GBD Study and the ranking from the Korean National Burden of Disease study showed a slight difference. The greatest reasons for the discrepancy were differences between the methods of calculating disability adjusted life years and the sources used to calculate the epidemiological index. The burden of disease study¡¯s main objective was priority for policy. In order to do so, measurements based on evidence and reliable data should be made. Additionally, there should be a study of burden of disease measured at various demographics, including gender, age, geographic location, income class, and academic background. Moreover, various sources of data are needed to produce statistical indicators, and it is important to utilize big data analysis echniques and maintain a stable human resources infrastructure.
